Subject Description

This Physical Education course will give students the opportunity to learn about anatomy, biomechanics, energy systems, psychology and societal influences on sport. Much of this will be delivered through engaging practical learning situations. This course will also have a unit on adolescent health issues. 


How and what will I learn at Level 1, 2, and 3? 


This course will comprise units covering broad aspects of sports: Societal Influences; Human Performance and Psychology; Biomechanics and Anatomy; Health and Wellbeing; and Sports Education. 


Students completing this course will develop an understanding of: 

•     Anatomy/biomechanics/exercise physiology 

•     Societal influences 

•     Sports performance 

•     Sports education: coaching / leadership / personal training / event management /    player management 

•     Skill analysis including psychology 

•     Health and well-being 

                                         

Sports Science Level 2 


This course focuses on level 7 of the Health and Physical Education curriculum.  It will offer you the opportunity to experience and participate in a wide range of physical activities, in a variety of contexts. It will also help develop your understanding to become a better athlete, performer and coach. This course expands upon many of the learning outcomes covered in the Level 1 Sports Science course .


What will I learn? 


The course has a balance of theory and practical components. 

• There will be lectures, seminars, labs, visiting speakers and practical gym sessions 

• There is the opportunity to achieve a personal best in a regional sporting event 

• There are field trips (eg: Visiting Sports Science Lab )

• Achieve a high standard in three sports 

• Will reflect on their level of self responsibly

• A study of anatomy and biomechanics and how it relates to learning a physical skill 

• Students look at the significance of physical activity in the lives of young people 


A reasonable level of fitness and a real interest in sports, fitness and movement. A motivation to improve in those areas. 


Where does this subject lead? 


NCEA Level 3 and any sports related tertiary study.

The foundation Physical Education course contributes 16 credits towards the Level 2 National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) and is covered in 4 Modules of work. Each module is assessed against one Achievement Standard.

Perform a physical activity in an applied setting to meet performance criteria for L2 PE in Athletics or Golf.

Term 2

This achievement standard involves demonstrating understanding of how and why biophysical principles relate to the learning of physical skills. This year we will be using Athletics skills ( Throwing - Javelin, Discus, Shot Put ). Analysing a particular movement to improve performance, using biomechanical or biophysical terms relating to learning a skill. Students will need to research , video and write a report Also with use of electronic diary/blog/wiki. This can be presented to the teacher via video, powerpoint or written report at the end of the module (2.2)
